Aromatherapy is a treatment that uses bioactive components of aroma oil from plant extracts to let it penetrate the skin through massage, bathing, or steam to control the hormone secretion and maintain the balance in the bio-rhythm to enhance the beauty and further treat diseases and prevention.

History of Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy began in India and China aroung BC 4500-5000. There are recordings that musk was used in China, and santalum album L., ginger, myrrh, cinnamon, etc was used not only to cure diseases, but also in religious ceremonies. Also, in ancient Egypt, myrrh, and pine resin was applied to corpses to create mummies.

- Aroma oil must be diluted before using

- Aroma oil must not directly touch the eye area

Citrus

bergamo

Origin talian city “bergamo” where the oil was first originated

Extraction It is extracted from compressing frozen bergamot fruit’s skin

Scent Has a sweet fruity scent

Effect - Relaxes the muscle, tightens the pores, and removes sebum.

- Clears the pores, and cleanses oily type skin

lemon

Extraction It is extracted from compressing frozen lemon skin, or steam distillation

Scent Has a refreshing and sweet scent

Effect - Antibacterial

- Cures boils

- Very effective in removing corn and wart

- Sterilizing and whitening effect

- Very effective on freckles.

Wood

Name Also known as Himalayan Cryptomeria japonica

Extraction Cedarwood’s(40~50m in height) leaf or stem is steam distilled and extracted

Scent Warm balsam scent

Effect - Helps lymph excretion

- Effective in decomposition of cellulite

- Accelerates urination

- Effective in oily, pimply type skin

- Has sterilizing, convergence effect

Warning Has a possibility of abortion, so not recommended to pregnant women

eucalyplu

Origin “Eu” means “well”, “calytu” means “cover”, and it comes from the flower with the stamen being covered. Eucalyptus leaf has been well used by Australian natives to cure wounds

Extraction Eucalyptus (Grows up to around 100m, and is one of the tallest trees in the world. Australian evergreen) leaf steam distilled and extracted

Effect - Anti-inflammation, sterilization, antiseptic, rostellum effect.

- Increases skin respiration by promoting red blood cells’ oxygen carriage

- Effective in winter bathing and massage

- Gives refreshment to the skin and helps in curing muscle pain

Origin From “Little berries” in Latin. Fruit is called Juniperus

Extraction Juniperus is steam distilled and extracted

Scent Refreshing woody balsam scent

Effect - Has a detoxing effect, so toxin is discharged from the body

- Accelerates urination

- Has a fat dissolving property, so effective on cellulite and oily type skin

- Pimple, skin disorder, obesity curing effect

- Used in removing of sebum.

chamomile

Origin Originated from Latin chamai meaning “small”, and melon meaning “apple”. Chamomile has a scent similar to an apple around 30cm, so it was named.

Extraction Chamomile flower is extracted by steam distillation

jasmin

Origin Jasmine has a stronger scent when the sun is down, so it is called the “Queen of the night” in India

Extraction Jasmine flower is extracted by steam distillation or by using a solvent

Scent Has an elegant and luxurious scent

Effect - Normalizes the skin by controlling hormone balance

- Promotes the mother’s breast milk

- Calms the mind, Relaxation, Encourages sexual desire

- Effective to dry, oily, and sensitive type skin

Origin From Latin “wash”

Extraction Lavender flower is extracted from steam distillation

Origin From Latin rose means “dew” and marinus means “sea”, thus meaning the “dew of the sea”

Extraction Rosemary flower and leaf is extracted by steam distillation. Leaf must be harvested before the flower blooms

- Accelerates blood circulation, eases pain

- Accelerates sexual desire, urination

majoram

Origin Also known as “origanum”, combined from the Greek word “oros” and “ganos”, which means “Joy of the mountain”. “Major” from majoram is a prefix meaning “larger”, which also means to expand the life

Extraction Leaf and fore-end of the flower is extracted from steam distillation

Effect - Helps the flow of the blood, and effective in curing diseases

- Expands the artery and capillary vessel to give a warm feeling

- Effective in treating high-blood pressure
